President Uhuru Kenyatta has made changes in the military top command promoting Fatuma Ahmed to the rank of Major General in the Kenya Defence Forces. She becomes the Kenyan woman to become Major General in the Kenya Defence Forces. Fatuma was among other commanders that were sworn in by the president. In 2015, Fatumah also became the first female brigadier in the forces. Other commanders who were promoted include Robert Kibochi from the Kenya Army who was promoted to the rank of the Vice Chief of Defence Forces to replace Lieutenant General Joseph Kasaon who has retired. Major General Walter Raria replaced Kibochi as the Kenya Army commander. Major General Samuel Thuita, the commander of the Kenya Air force, has also retired, his place taken by Major General Francis Ogola. Speaking after conducting the exercise, the President expressed commitment to work with the new team in building capacity in line with the KDF mandate. He urged the army commanders to lead by example from their vast experience in building a strong and modern force.
